I have to write an essay on why MacArthur or Truman had the best strategy, not just choose an answer.

people who think MacArthur was a great general need to read more about him. He had his moments but he was sub-par at best. MacArthur landed and pushed the North Koreans back into their own country in the early parts of the war. They were reinforced by the Chinese though. This led to the Americans being pushed back into South Korea.

Truman wanted to contain the North and keep South Korea where it was. This meant holding back and keeping the Chinese out of the war. MacArthur wanted to abomb the Chinese, and push them back into China. his radical plans for attack would have Definitely led to all out war with China. Truman did not want this. The South were pushed back and that was fine by him. MacArthur wanted to use all out power against the Chinese and bring us to WW-III.

So you have to think about this. MacArthur wanted all out war to win in Korea. Truman wanted to maintain a sense of balance. Why he removes him is another story. Please don't listen to the "he was a great general speeches" because he was not.

Actually MacArthur's Inchon landing was a success. It also got him into trouble with Truman. Because he did it without Trumans or the U.N. approval. The odd thing about that war was that it was a U.N. action. The Chinese backed the north. The Chinese also sit on the U.N. Security Council. So any plan that MacArthur may have had that needed U.N. approval, basically handed the plans to the Chinese. The Inchon Landing eventually lead to a southerly withdrawl, because of this.
