No other city has contributed more to the civilization of mankind than Athens. It is the place where Socrates was born, Plato, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and many others. It is the place that humanism and democracy were born. The intellectual light that Athens created will always be alive.

Sikyon, a town 11 miles northwest of Corinth in the northern Peloponnese, was for the arts in antiquity what Athens was for philosophy. Two of the greatest artists in Sculpture were born here, who influenced the art profoundly.
Sikyon's importance is though far greater. It is little known (if at all) that the birth of tragedy was founded here as early as 7th century BC and that painting in its present form was developed and spread to the whole Hellas from this small place.

Many great artists studied at her famous schools of painting and sculpture.
Sikyon was the first settlement of Achaeans, therefore the most ancient city state of Greece. According to the old common belief it was here that Prometheus brought the fire to mankind.

Every four years a pan-Hellenic truce was announced and people from all over Hellas gathered at Olympia, in order to compete and attend the Games. The prize for the winner was the "kotinos", a garland made from wild olive tree.
Olympia was as sacred site as Delphi. The sacred precinct was situated in the valley of Alpheios, in the territory Pisatis and at the enclosure of Alte "the most beautiful place of Greece", in the north-western Peloponnese.
Though the Games historically started at 776 BC, which is considered the first Olympiad, they were held from very ancient times and tradition tell us that they were renewed by Herakles.
In this unifying event, only free Greeks were allowed to take part. Greeks from as far as the gates of Herakles, the Caspian sea and Africa, came to compete and attend and philosophers, sages, heroes and well admired men could be seen here.
It is not accidental that Greece for the first time in history held the Games. This was a unique event, a product of a higher civilization, in which the people were honoring their race and Gods, who had favored them with arete, strength and grace.

Thebes, the birthplace of the legendary hero Herakles and men of importance like Pindar and Epameinondas, played a major role in the affairs of Greece, from its early history as the many legends of the city testify. Though not a great power, for a short time, thanks to the genius of Epameinondas and its superb trained army, led by the Sacred Band, took the hegemony of Greece by defeating the invincible Sparta.
Among other achievements was the formation of a league under its leadership, which united almost all the Boeotian cities.
