Something with a nice "feel". No sharp or hard edges, but smooth and comfortable. Pretend to eat - is the fork balanced or too heavy or light? I find that price has little to do with it. I could spend a fortune buying one place setting at a time, or get the whole set and serving pieces at Costco or Sam's club and be just as happy.

I recommend first finding a style or pattern that you like, and that matches your dinnerware. A more simple or sleek style is best because it will match several different dish sets- if you're like me and own more than one for different occasions.

Next, you want to find a set that is durable...how to tell this: it's stainless steel (not silver), and is heavy. In other words each piece is probably thicker than some other comparable brands. Oneida makes a great brand and is fairly inexpensive ($100-$200 for a 12 person set).

Lastly- I recommend purchasing a 12 person place setting with added utensils such as large salad spoon and fork, butter knife, ladle, etc. to match. Even if you don't have a 12 place setting dinnerware, it helps to have 12 place setting in flatware. You never know if you might accidentally throw one down the trash (as my children sometimes do), drop one down the garbage disposal (as I sometimes do), plus it's nice to have the 12 person set when you have several people over and serve hor'dourves. You will really appreciate having the extra flatware.

The only thing to add is shininess. I know it sounds strange, but well made stainless is shiny-er than cheaper stuff. The difference? Stainless steel CAN rust. so the better the quality, the longer it will last... personal experience. Style is your choice, but, I have found that sharper forks stick better into food...
