Hi. If you wish to stay with a single core processor then there are bargains out there for both brands. I personally prefer AMD because I mod and overclock my computer. If you plan on gaming then single core will work fine. If you want to be ready for the future then dual core (or quad core, or 2010 based core) will be expensive. Spend your pennies on the best graphics card you can afford.

This has been an ongoing race. For quite a while AMD was ahead, and now I believe currently Intel is ahead again.

Though AMD claims this:
"With the AMD64 platform, we established our leadership in 64-bit computing. Now we are proud to be leading the computing industry in dual-core x86 performance and performance-per-watt."

I personally just prefer AMD processors.
Usually they have the best price/performance.

Intel currently has the upper hand in the processor war. The Core 2 Duo basically eliminated AMD's top of the line.

No one actually answered the question.....In most games, it's the video card, not cpu, that determines the performance. If on a budget, getting a AMD x2 3600+ type, 2gb of ram and a Radeon X1950 pro (or close as you can get it-or faster if you can afford it)., would be best for gaming. www.tomshardware.com for benchmarks.
