I have a pretty large glass bowl that I want to start a terrarium in, but I do not have a lid for it. Will it still work? Also any one who has done a Terrarium I'll love to hear any advice you can give. I'm looking to do a really easy one with only a few plants, just to see how it goes.
Thanks

Not using a lid is fine. Make sure you lay a layer of small pebbles in the very bottom. The layer should be a few inches thick. This layer under the dirt will allow the water to drain so the roots don't get mushy and die. It also give the roots a little more room to grow. Make sure you inspect the plants real good before planting them together. Look under al the leaves and stems for tiny white bugs that often come in plants we buy in the store. If you find them spray the plants real good with a little alcohol and water mixture. It will kill the bugs within a few days if made sure you sprayed under the leaves and all around the stalk. After a couple days wash the plants under a running faucet to wash off the spray and any left over bugs. Now you're ready to plant away. Have fun and enjoy watching them grow into a beautiful arrangement.

Sure, but your going to have to water it all the time. The whole idea of a Terrarium is not having to water it, also the plants won't grow large. Find a small pane of glass somewhere, or maybe another jar set up sided down on top should work.

The whole idea of a terrarium, is to keep moisture in. You could put some plastic wrap over openning and bind it with an elastic. It will depend on what type of plants you use, best consult the net or your nearest greenhouse. Make sure your soil has drainage, i.e. - pebbles on the botton.

My objective in growing a terrarium was it was self regulating self contained garden. Without the top, it will have to have water and nutrients added on a regular basis. I suggest you put a piece of plastic or Saran Wrap on the top and seal with a rubber band. It may work.

Saran wrap. By definition a terrarium is sealed. They have that new stuff that conforms very well, so you shouldn't need a rubber band to clutter up the simple beauty.
Good luck.

it will never work, as all the moisture will escape. that is not a terarium, but potted plants.
