I would like to upgrade my mother board but not sure which is right for my computer. I have a sony vaio VGC-RA710G desktop. I want the motherboard to have pci express and can support p4 or higher. Any advice would be great =).

check newegg.com and see what's availible. P4's come in two forms, socket 775 and 478. 478's are mostly AGP only, 775's mostly the new stuff (PCi-X, DDr2, etc..)

just build a new one. it's not worth upgrading your motherboard for a p4.
