Dr Spock reccommends:

Cleaning a thermometer
You clean a thermometer by washing it with lukewarm water and soap. You can then wipe it off with rubbing alcohol, but be sure to rinse it with cold water to get rid of the alcohol taste before using it again.

Easiest way is to just buy covers in your drugstore, then you always have a clean surface.

It depends, are you going to put it in a person's mouth? If so, then you can use some hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol, but if yuo use the rubbing alcohol, then make sure there is no trace of it on the thermometer after you're done sterilizing so that the person who will use it doesn't get any of the alcohol in their mouth. That should be the proper way to sterilize the thermometer.

For a home thermometer, I'd say that wiping it down with alcohol is sufficient.

Either rub alcohol on it or put it in boiling water for about... 10 seconds and then wipe it with a cloth that's been in the water.

Rubbing alcohol or Listerine works well. You can also use grain alcohol or any booze that's 80 proof or more!
