There is a very special McDonalds in Chicago. I'm not sure if the official name is "The Rock and Roll McDonalds" or if it is just that everyone calls it that. It is near Hard Rock downtown.
It is decorated with tons of stuff from the 50s to 70s, I think. Among other things are a Corvette sports car. Not a model, the actual car; think it is a 1959? The thing I was most impressed with was a 3D holigram of a dancer. It was very lifelike.
At various times, I have seen soup and pizza. I think they had salads before any of the other McDonalds did. Perhaps they use that to try out new products.
One McDonalds that I stopped at had a desert called Kringla (sp?) It is a soft cookie like thing that is kind of prezzel shaped. The area where it is located has a large Scandinavian population so it makes sense.
Do others, even in the U.S. have regional specialties?
To directly answer the question, I don't get Big Macs very often, but occationally. Years ago they were a LOT better. So were the fries; they used to be the best in the world, but not any more.
There have been several other similar burgers at other chains. Marc's Big Boy comes to mind. Actually, those were a better product, but McDonalds marketing was better.
I do like the fish sandwich if they don't put too much salt on it. Some of the cooks load everything with salt, tons of it. The food there already has too much and they pour on more.
I also like the chicken strips with the buffalo dipping sauce. I think they are better than KFC's strips. Popeye's is better than either though. Church's has a good rep, but I have not tried them yet.
Sometimes I get the salads. The fruit and nut thing was a good idea, but they ruined it by putting sugar on the nuts, yuck.

I am from the land down under and i would have to say that my favourite item at McDonald's would have to be the McOz. It's a lean beef pattie, lettuce tomato onion sauce on a sesame seed bun. MMM Delicious.

I'm in Australia and the only thing I can eat on the McDonald's menu here are hash browns. Everything else makes me want to throw up.
