Struggling to make ends meet, Gardner finds himself and his five-year-old son evicted from their San Francisco apartment with nowhere to go. When Gardner lands an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, he and his son endure many hardships, including living in shelters, in pursuit of his dream of a better life for the two of them.

Unfortunately homelessness and the underemployed are huge epidemics in America.
If you remember, he ended up sleeping in the public bathroom because there wasn't enough room at the homeless shelter.
In economically depressed areas, it isn't unusual for people's friends and associates to be as financially strapped as Chris Gardner was.
It is scary how many people are one paycheck away from being homeless - and that is essentially what happened to them.

In the UK, if you have a child and are homeless, you will get a flat (apartment) like that (clicks fingers). I guess that is a good thing about this country, although people do abuse the system. Young girls get pregnant for the sole reason to live of benefits (welfare) and get thier free council flat.

Its a brilliant film, both Will Smith and his son acted brilliantly, though im not sure about the help they should of received, i think its alot to do with how proud the father was that maybe he didnt want to ask for help to prove to his son that he wasnt a failure as a father.

Chris didn't have any friends or family beside his neighbor. He had to get the job so he couldn't just move to Washington to his aunt. Besides, he didn't have a car and taxis are really expensive.

as you saw later in the film, he did find a shelter to stay in... as you saw, it was only one night... and generally shelters can be hard to get into because there is such a high demand for them... and most aren't accepting people in the middle of the night.
sometimes, people don't have anyone to lean on when they need help.
