The power supply (I'm guessing this is what you mean) or transformer shouldn't get hot, or at least too hot.

If yours is, then it's not getting enough air circulation.

Check the following:

The fan comes on when you turn on the computer. In the back is a vent and you should be able to see or hear the fan whir up. If not, you'll need a new fan (they're only $5 or so, for the average machine).

The air vents are not clogged with dust. This is by FAR the #1 reason I see things overheat. Particularly if you keep the box on the floor, but it can happen anywhere. Usually you can pull the lint off with your hands, but you may need to use a vacuum (use the plastic attachment to minimize static).

The computer is in a hutch and can't get enough air - particularly if you close the hutch. I don't like hutches because they usually don't allow for enough air.

So, check and clean all vents. Make sure it has room on all sides and isn't boxed in a place where it can overheat.

If it's really old you may need to take it somewhere and ask them to open it up and clean out all the dust on the inside, but try the above steps first.

PSU's under 700w have each and every of the general connectors you %, till you're working a complicated GPU card (it assist you to understand if it desires seven-hundred). The seven-hundred+w PSU's have connectors for something you are able to % (in all fairness). the great watts needed (different than the particular connector) is predicated on your CPU, GPU card, memory (very almost negligible), and the optimal watt mix of different kit which you're probably to run at one time (you infrequently run each and every little thing on the comparable time). Modular PSU's have detachable cables, so any you do not use, are not on your way (blockading airflow). once you are going to start up with a blu-ray, a miles less high priced pics card is a waste of time (you lose each and every of the extra photograph on show). till you're making use of the force as a burner to get extra storage, you are able to probable be extra useful off getting a general DVD with a extra useful GPU & PSU, then upload a Blu-ray later once you get the money.

If it gets too hot, it will shut itself down, thus cutting your power. You most likely need a new one and it wouldnt help to invest in some case fans for airflow. Antec makes a GREAT PSU, as well as many others. Shop online for the best deals, newegg.com. amazon, and zipzoomfly.com have great deals on PSU's.

In addition to the good advice already given, are you talking about the transformer jobbie on the supply cable to your laptop?

If so, they do get hot inherently, shouldn't be a problem.

I think it is very easy to think it is overheating. However they do tend to run hot so you may be worrying over nothing.
