It was a system of feudalism. for their services they were awarded amounts of land which they could have peasants work and collect revenue off of without doing anything physical other than warring. The empire admired them for their service.

They received land from the emperor, which they collected revenue from. Additionally, they would give out land to their own vassals, and expected tribute from them.

Additionally, they got to keep the distribute the spoils of their conquered!!!
