If there was a check for 1000 dollars in someones trash can, would you be able to cash it?
Is an object still theirs once they throw it out?
What if they threw away 1000 dollars cash and someone took it? Would that be okay? If you throw something out, does it make it not yours anymore?
Just wondering.

So if you stole something from the garbage you'd be stealing from the city?

In the first question, I wasn't asking what you guys would do...I was asking if it was legal. Sorry for the confusion!

Once thrown away, it becomes property of the city.
Even a check which is really nothing more than a piece of paper.
When you use that paper to draw money from their account, however- you are stealing- Because they didn't throw the money away- it's been safe in their account all along.

Hmmmm, very interesting question. Really makes you wonder...
Well, seeing how an object is in the trash can which is still their propriety, I'd say that the check is still theirs. I guess tha same goes for the cash. They still haven't gotten completely rid of it, it's still in the can which belongs to them.
As for the question at the beginning, no, I could definately not cash the check, the guilt would eat me out. Besides, I was never crazy for money... It doesn't matter to me that much. There are more important values in life than the money.

It would be illegal to try and cash a check for any amount of money that didn't belong to you.
Finding money that doesn't belong to you becomes an issue of ethics. Finding money in someones trash can doesn't necessarily mean it belongs to the person that owns the trash can. You could turn it into the police, this way there is a chance of getting the money back.

Well, i dont think anyone would intentionally throw that much money out, so it had to have been a mistake, and in any case i dont think it would be my money to use, even if someone did throw it away...i´d just try to return it to the owner, if i was sure of who it was, or leave it.
And hmm thats an interesting question and im not sure if there´s like a rule written down for this somewhere, but i think once you´ve payed for something, its yours for life, until it goes to the junk yard or gets recycled.
Just my theory though. Have a nice day. :)

It's still wrong, It's still check fraud, and YES it is stealing from the city if it's in the trash.
