Judging from the threatening way Bush & so many absurd people in their use of the word in confronting opposing Americans, does one whether they even know how to define the real meaning of it., or even realize that "patriotism" has ethical connotations, & that the word, in itself, implies that the nation's moral standard or moral value and is connected to the pride iof its ethically & morally good achievements & culture to allow its members to have desire to preserve its morally and ethically good character or its culture, and to have all feel good to be identified with the rest of its members? Although patriotism may be closely associated with nationalism, nationalism only promotes patriotic attitudes as desirable and appropriate. Nationalist political movements/patriotic expression may be unethically & immorally negative. To be nationalistic, right or wrong, exhibits bad judgement.Patriotism means putting one's country above the self & be willing to die for it's moral/ethical values.

I don't think Americans understand the meaning. It is pathetic today how many young people who volunteer for the armed services have no desire to serve. The sign up to get free schooling. The whole point of the military is to serve one's country and the free college money is just a perk. Still these young people complain if they have to serve. Years ago they wouldn't have had the choice, they would have been sent and they wouldn't have gotten a free college education.

My uncles all served in WWII and they didn't get a free education but they felt it was their duty to serve.

patriotism is just a word to use get people fired up to fight in wars. it would be true patriotism if ALL americans had health care, affordable housing, higher wages,no hunger, and rascism. that to me would be patriotism. all any cares a/b is rich people who can afford all the things that make the military more appealing. i support our troops who believe in what they are protecting but i don't see why they have to die so we can force democracy on people so we can control their oil. this was not a just war. iraq had nothing to do w/ 9/11. they just had oil. and now many americans and many innocent iraqi people are dead and for what. OIL. let's start worrying a/b what's happening here first.
