I think it's because most people, when face to face with someone, get a lot of information by "reading" the other person's face. Their expressions, their smile and they way they look at you, can tell you a lot. But clowns have a permanent happy face with big eyebrows and a smile that never goes away but behind all that they could be a total nut-job. Personally, the only clown that's ever scared me is John Wayne Gacy.

Many people don't find clowns scary -
but for those who do, things that are different are often scary. And clowns exist in an entirely different universe. They dress differently - they wear unusual and very different make up, they have exaggerrated clothing and they suffer all sorts of falls and physical accidents and they never get hurt.
Some christians have developed a whole clown theology, where the clown image represents the resurrected body - makes the difference more acceptable.
But it's like being scared of the native costumes of a different country. Once you know more about them, they're not nearly as scary.

I dont know, but they scare the sh*t out of me. If I see one walking , I walk on the other side of the street. I think it's the media that's polluted out minds. There's always a scary/slasher clown in movies. Also any bad thing ot person on TV or in the movies, usually dresses up like a clown or mime.

You ned to rephrase this question because they're aren't scary to everyone. Especially me. So chill out, it's just some person wearing a lot of make up like these teenage girls today.

Many people are afraid of others trying so hard to be something that they are not. More so when what they are pretending does not look anything like a normal person. We are afraid of differeces. Hence the racism issues. We fear the different.

Because they're hiding behind make-up (another face). As are most people we know. Ever hear the song that starts "Smiling faces...." about someone who smiles in your face & then stabs you in the back?(figuratively)
