School lunch is provided through government funding, and is regulated closely, mostly for cost and nutritional value, not taste.
It may taste horrible, but you're most likely getting all your daily values, and saving money on cafeteria food means more to spend on up-to-date books, music and athletic programs, hiring teachers, etc.
Also, mass production definitely plays a big role. There are thousands and thousands of students who eat cafeteria food every single day in each school zone/county. It's hard enough just cooking for a few people at home!

Beacuse they just make food whatever way they want and it comes out horrible. One time, I asked one of the lunch ladies that question and she said "If you don't like it so much bring cold lunch or no lunch at all!" I hope they don't cook like that at home. If they do, all in favor of McDonalds!!!

cooking in large volume is not the same as at home. It's hard to season the food to everyone's liking or needs, so they really don't much at all! yuk

almost all the food is shipped to the schools in boxes, so its sitting in the freezer for a very long time before its used.
