The answer needs to be a plausible way that Pyro uses to manipulate fire because this is for my science class.

In response to the first answerer: Pyro even admits he cannot create the fire [that was Firestar's ability], he can just manipulate it. So, on to an answer...
Let's think about what "thing" can "manipulate" something else. To grab a line from another sci-fi movie, "Use the Force". Okay, let's think of what terms can be applied to fire or flame: hmmm plasma or energetic particles of matter? My point being fire results because of an oxidation process, but it is a very very energetic process, and forces in nature can control energy.
Now, the four forces in nature are:
The strong nuclear force
the weak nuclear force
electromagnetism
and the wimp of the four, gravity.

The brain operates by use of electrical impulses going along things like synapses and motor neurons and other things. [Sorry, never really any good at biology so back to the simple science of physics.] Electromagnetism determines how electricity behaves or operates or functions or whatever term you want to use.
Enough background, now for the answer
His mental processes create an electromagnetic field of force that he can then manipulate with his mind. Every magnet has force field lines or lines of force. He simply wills those lines of electromagnetic force to warp, throw, shrink, or whatever the energy of the flame.
Yes, it's a stretch, but hey so are the X-men.
Oh yeah just read over and see I forgot, you better mention a person named James Clerk Maxwell, anyway passing current through a circuit or wire creates a magnetic field around that wire. If you move a wire or circuit through an electromagnetic field, it will induce a current in that wire/circuit. So, think of the synaptic pathways as circuits. Pass an electrical current through those pathways and it creates a magnetic field that can then be manipulated.

From a realistic point of view (something hard to apply to X-men), he would have to produce some sort of fast-combustible fuel to manipulate fire. Maybe he shoots alcohol from his skin cells, like a fire-breather. That would mean he has an extra organ or something to hold the alcohol, and some sort of spiderman-like ducts in his hands or something for spraying the fuel.

assuming his hands were fire resistant,
all he would need is a fuel that is autocombustible when put under pressure (like the plugs in a diesel engine)
and it would have to combust under low pressures. a pressure so low he could produce it with one hand
then he would need a tube a la spider-man to shoot oil some other fuel that could be propelled very far.

but it is highly unlikey of any of this existing
