when i run my daughters humidifier white residue shows up on the furniture. is it true that adding salt to the water will eliminate this problem? is this reccommended?

The white buildup is calcium. Calcium is suspended in the water, and as the liquid steams off, the calcium concentration increases per liquid volume.

There are additives you could add to the water to neutalize the calcium buildup in the humidifier, but that can get costly. You could also use distilled water. Distilled water would have the calcium removed during the distilling process.

Otherwise, learn to replace the water more frequently, and that should cut down on the white powder residue. Don't forget to rinse out and flush the humidifier when you change water. Don't just add more water, as that will defeat the purpose.

nope, adding salt may add to the residue. using purified water will reduce or eliminate it. You will need water purified by a reverse osmosis system. They sell them at most home centers. just carbon filters won't do the job.

I would think that would add to it, if you live in the midwest or anywhere they use salt on the streets to melt the ice - take a look at your car and you tell me with a mixture of salt and water.

Salt will make it worse. Use purified water in the unit.. those are mineral deposits you are seeing.

To close to furniture. Try adding vinegar.
