The guy who thought of it, originally placing ordinary rocks in boxes with a fictional written story on a piece of paper, soon became a millionaire off of that idea. Is he a genius or got lucky? What is your view on it?

pretty smart. kinda like this head on thing. they never say what it does you just apply directly to the forehead. you know some will buy it just to see if it does anything

I think you're a couple of decades off. The Pet Rock fad was in the late 60's. There may have been a revival by yuppies in the 80's though.

He was a genius, though it was total luck..i wish i would have thought of it..my parents were one of the idiots that bought the pet rock.. i think my mom still has one on the shelf in her bedroom come to think of it..it was a great idea and people bought into it..

Of course it was genius... people were buying rocks! I mean you could just go outside and pick up a rock for free, for god's sake!

I think it's a pretty clever idea! He took a raw material (a rock) personalized it, marketed it, and sold it at huge profits. Brilliant!

I had one. It was red with black polka dots. I took it everywhere. I think it got kidnapped though. Yeah you are right about the luck of some people.

i think it's an excellent testiment to the fact that with the right marketing, people will buy anything. i say, good for him...he found a way to make a really good living without hurting anyone (and i don't think he hurt the people who bought them from him, because they made the choice to buy it...)
