I have been to 6 jewelers all say find an assayer. where is one located in central NC?

NC was the first big gold discovery area in US. Today it is tougher to deal with getting gold checked. You need about 3 to 5 pounds of representative mineralized rock if you want to send it to a commercial analytical laboratory or assay office for assay. Try asking at UNC to locate one locally.

Does it feel soft as well as looking shiny?. If it is bright colored but flinty looking it might be pyrite (fool's gold). If it looks right keep persisting.

Take it to the nearest University, the biology dept, they should be able to help or point you in the right direction.

I agree with taking it to the university, but you want the GEOLOGY dept, not biology.
