A 350 properly built with a turbocharger could give you some good pulling power, with slightly better fuel economy down even highways. A 454 properly built will make sure to pull you up the grades without too much trouble. Transmissions and rear end gearing will make all the difference in the world for you, so compare notes with several shops if you can to find some ideas that may work for you. Good luck in your travels

what no one has mentioned is the Cadillac 500 cubic inch engine and plenty are still somewhat available. Use the motor and tranny. If memory serves me your framework will let you move motor mounts front and back and that 500 cubic engine will give you all you want on the lower and upper end. Call a few junk yards. Your going to get that a lot cheaper than the 454

Anything less than a 454 and turbo400 will dissapoint you. many, many thousands of dollars spent out fitting a small block and turbo350 do little to overcome this elephant of a vehicle. Many V-6 and older L-6 commercial diesel engines will outperform and outmileage that '350' engine 4-1. When it comes to gas fueled heavy haulers my trust and satisefaction goes to dodge with thier tried and perfected 440-auto.

You could use a small block chevy but all you are going to do is kill it in a short period of time. Best thing for that big old boat is a 454 and matching tranny. Keep an eye out for older trucks with big blocks. Big blocks won't work as hard as a small block. Small block will work but you won't be happy
