I just got a woodstove. my question is should the 6" pipe which comes out of the back of the stove just go into the fireplace or should i put an elbow on it and extend it through the damper? I do have metal covering the fireplace opening with the pipe going through.

Please, please, please extend it up thru at least the damper. Unless your fireplace cover is perfectly sealed, you will get smoke back into the house every time you fire the stove. Conversely, if the cover isn't vented to allow incoming air, smoke could hang in your firebox indefinitely and create a hazard.

Your local code may require you to extend the flue all the way up the chimney but that probably isn't really necessary. Make sure to seal around the flue thru the damper and keep up with yearly cleanings if you use the stove often.

Good Luck!

It is best to run the pipe all the way up the chimney. The stove will run better because it will not have possible draw/draft problems. It is hard to do and is time cosuming, but worth the effort. If you have any doubts about your ability to do this, call a pro. Improperly installed woodstoves are a major fire hazard!

Hi kscape2002,

It would be better to extend it but not necessary. I have had one connected to my fireplace for several years and it extends past the damper & they put fiberglass around it to seal the damper. They told me that would help start the draw on a cold chimney.

Be sure to clean it every year. I do & I have to pull the fiberglass down but it easily presses back in place.

Both solutions sound a little 'iffy' Extending the pipe up the chimney is the better of the two. It will draw better
