I usually start with the corners. That can uncover a lot of the surrounding areas. Look to the numbers for clues on how many mines are in any area.
Example:
1@1
111
You can be sure that @ is a mine.
If they look like this:
11
@2
@31
2@1
Then the first ones on the second and third rows, and the second one on the third row are mines.
It takes practice, but it can be won.
Tip: Create a custom board with 10 X 10, with 10 mines. Or 20 X 20 with 10 mines. (100 X 100 with 10 mines is TOO easy...)

Reveal Mines
With your cursor inside the minesweeper window type "XYZZY" then press Shift-Enter and Enter. A white dot should appear in the upper-left corner of the screen. If it turns black, your cursor is resting on a mine.
Note: This trick works best if your Windows background is black. Also note that code will not work in Windows 95 or Windows NT.

yeah, just hold down shift the whole time you are playing, because when you click on a box that is not been turned over or flagged, it highlights all the boxes touching it, but if there is lets say a 2 and 4 untouched blocks around it, and you flag 2 of the 4 blocks and then click on the 2 it will automatically flip the unflagged blocks. this really helps out and makes it go faster, also seems to prevent as many mistakes. hope this helps.
