It could be a number of reasons. Hopefully, it was because they couldn't tolerate this anymore and their consciences got to them. It could also be because they are afraid their reelection campaigns will suffer if they didn't. The voters continue to make their voices heard, as they should be, through their representation in Washington. Not that Bush will listen of course...

I think it took *incredible* courage to do that, considering that their own party was trying to keep them in lockstep. They risk alienating their Republican base, but they took that chance. More power to 'em.
