I've noticed that a lot of people don't say thank you after doors are held for them. I held a door for a girl the other day at school I smiled and said "Good morning" and she just glared at me and blew by. I was thinking, Gee, your welcome your royal highness, I'm sorry I forgot to throw down the rose petals for you like in the movie "Coming to America." This applies to other situations too. You guys notice that courtesy is fast becoming a lost art in the world, or is it just us here in the states?

Just in the good ol' USA, because people here think their $#!+ don't stink and Americans are god's gift to the world. Sadly, Americans are known the world over as being rude and selfish people.

I have been to Canada and Great Britain many times and people there are far more courteous and appreciative.

Yes, it's just that American's are holier than thou attitude. This reminds me of when I was a cold war soldier stationed in Germany. How often I'd hear one of my fellow G.I.'s huff and puff about how they were treated in town. "They all have to learn English in school. They understood me perfectly well. Have they forgotten that we saved all their @$$e$ FROM Hitler?". Most of the G.I.'s thought they were better than the Germans.

I faired much better. I respected the fact that I was in THIER country. It's amazing the change in attitude if you at least tried to speak their language. They would help with what english they knew as long as the AMERICAN made the effort to accept he was not in America. I picked up on a few local customs and didn't go out of my way to advertise my American-ness in my dress. If i wore a hat to hide the tell-tale hair to ear line of distintion, i was rarely singled out as a G.I. and had a lot of fun over there.

A lot could be learned by Americans treating each other better by my little story, but just as the guys who asked me why I never had trouble in town didn't listen to my reasoning, neither will any readers here

Ever heard of the term "The Ugly American"? It's our lack of respect for ourselves and others that coined this phrase.

No one is teaching our Children other wise.

Sad but True.

Uh, are you under the impact that there became into it sluggish in the previous while those issues have been straightforward? study the books of Jane Austen, working example. That became right into a pair of centuries in the past, and those features have been particularly uncommon. In different words, all people, considering the fact that in the past Socrates has asked what you're asking. that is because of the fact human beings take the admonisions of the previous as descriptions of certainly habit. particular, human beings are growing to be to be fairly louder, and for a jointly as cussing has misplaced its tabooness. yet kindness, courtesty, compassion, and manners have been by no ability straightforward. In some techniques, they are greater straightforward now than ever in the past. there have been continually human beings excluded from some super advantages of the above in the past. much less so now. human beings being bossy, hateful, ungrateful, and rude have been issues as long as there have been human beings.

i just hosted an austrian exchange student... he was really polite and courteous but some of the other austrians in the group were not so nice. i dont think it is just americans that are not courteous.... i think it just has to do with the person. I hate how mean the world is getting... especially online... its like being an asshole is "cool" and i hate it. it is people like you that make it better though... i am always glad to hear that there are still nice people in this world :D ok well thank you!

Courteous is gone just like the Jerry curl.

Nobody says good bye on the phone anymore and most people don't say thank you anymore. At least I'm still Courteous.

I get nervy! If I hold a door open for someone, which I always do as a courtesy, and if they don't even give me a smile, I simply say, "Ummm, you're welcome." That gets a response - usually a negative one. But hopefully it will make people think twice before being rude and uncouth!

Great point!

Yeah that annoys me too when you make eye contact with someone and say hello and they avert their eyes and shuffle away.
Makes me feel like a stalker when obviously I was just in a good mood. I was raised to say sir and mam, etc - be respectful of people's things and feelings, treat women with the same respect but a little bit gentler...........and I will teach the same when i have kids.

Courtesy has become a slave of money and status. Even individuals much less business entities, existing in today's atmosphere are always looking at the bottom line of "What'll I profit from it."

Seems that people just quit caring about others needs and are so deep into their lives they simply forgot about it.It truly is a shame.
