I would like to meet my neighbors, but I want to do so safely (and not to dork-ily). I met one, and she is really nice, but the city is kind of weird in that you have nice house, average house, dumpy housing all mixed together, so I am not certain how safe it is to traipse around the neighborhood going up to doors. But I would like to know who is living around me. Any suggestions?

I mean "too dork-ily" not "to dork-ily" for all you grammar police (myself included) :)

too dorky-ly? LOL Just wear something very businesslike like a suit or a business skirt and jacket, then get a clipboard and black gov't pen, some legal paper and some kind of i.d. made up such as for U.S.D.A. or some non-police sounding branch of government and go door to door asking questions. Tell them you are getting information because you volunteer as a neighborhood watch committee spokesperson. Pretty soon everyone will want to join the committee and you are a hero! Wait, what was the question? Does your neighborhood have a "watch program"? Start one. Then it gives you a reason to go door-to-door, and you are making your neighborhood safer. LOL! Good luck, but don't knock on my door. I have a trap-door under the mat and it is activated by knocking or ringing the doorbell. I already have 2 girlscouts, a poll-taker, some D.E.A. guy who keeps threatening to shoot through the door, wall, ceiling, etc. and about 7 7-day adventists. I better go check on them, see you later.

People who live in dumpy houses can be good neighbors as well. But... It is tough figuring out if they are safe. You could start by picking a few of the closest neighbors and printing a "Hello" greeting and leaving it on their doors. That's not really too dorky. Just intruduce yourself and leave an email address and say that you would love to arrange to get together sometime.

From that point, you will network with the neighbors that they already know.

Good Luck

Where I live, most of the neighborhoods have block parties. They get permission to block the street off and send out flyer's to all of the people that live on the street and set up tables and food and games...it really works, and then you have a whole street that looks out for each other and feels like more of what a neighborhood should feel like.

Depending on where you live but why not hold a street party. That is how i met my neighbours. Just tell everyone to bring their own food and drink, bring the bbq in the street, get a radio with loud speakers and go for it.
