To get the drive open, straighten out a paper clip and insert it in the little hole in the front. That'll release the disk and eject it. After it's been removed, try rebooting to see if the stuck disk was the problem.

It's a possible hardware problem, but XP has had problems in the past where the CD-ROMs would disappear due to problems with EasyCD-Creator. Below is a link to fix it, if that's the problem.

Good luck,
Don

I would say that its just finally given up the ghost, they dont last forever. The good news is that they have gone down in price so much in the last few years that its insane not to have 2 DVD-CD RW installed in your desktop pc, they can be had on sale for around 25 dollars. this is the easiest way to fix your problem. If you dont want to buy a new one, open your case and make sure all the power and data cables are connected properly at both ends and not cracked or worn through somewhere from a fan. if this doesnt work, I would get a new one..

This could be either a hardware, software, or malware problem.
1. Hardware. Your CDRW could be unplugged, defective, or even needing cleaning.
2. Software. The drivers could be corrupt or need reinstalled. Go to Device Manager to reinstall drivers.
3. Malware. I think this is most likely the culprit.
Get antivirus software update it, scan your computer. Some free and good antivirus software is available at www.majorgeeks.com
