I'm a fairly decent guy, who made one mistake - a DUI (1 beer + 1 week before my 21st birthday + busted taillight getting me pulled over = me bent over the DA's desk). I have been trying to piece my life back together, since the great state of Calf***meover has seen fit to tear it apart over this mistake.
I have my licenses to transact life insurance and property & casualty insurance, and these licenses were difficult and expensive to come by, and also required the DOJ to do a background check which determined that my DUI had nothing to do with dishonesty, so its not a problem.
Except that it IS a problem. Because nobody will hire me, since I have a record (the conviction is more than a year old, even).
My question is, does anyone out there know if there is something I can do to survive these background checks? I haven't had a job for two months, and I don't qualify for welfare (I'm not a minority person, even though whites are the minority here).
I really need some advice. Thanks.

Look into getting your record sealed. I did it here in CO and it cost me 12 envelopes, postage, 12 copies, and $132 in filing fees. I had to go to the Clerk Of The Court and have a motion filed. I had to wait for 30 days to pass, and when no one objected, I got a court order to seal the records. I then mailed all the pertinent parties a copy of the order. Done!

Most job applications ask if you have ever been convicted of anything more than a minor traffic violation. Answer it honestly, and at the time of the interview, bring it up again, voluntarily and honestly, and then crack a joke that even our president has had a dui. I had one eleven years ago, at the ripe old age of 20. I always mention that "when I was young and stupid I made a stupid mistake. Even our president has had a dui." So far, I've landed two of the three jobs I really wanted.

You know--something that might sway me as an employer would be if you volunteered some time helping keep kids from making the same mistake you did. Contact your local chapter of MADD and see if they do programs at local high schools. Since you're searching for employment anyway, you may have the time, and you can include a letter with every application showing that not only was that mistake a year ago, but you have actively worked to counteract it through your charitable work. Also--you might really help someone!

yeah it is undemanding for most businesses to take action. in case you had an interview with the govtworking example they might oftentimes say on the interview we want you to take a drug attempt and run your software besides the undeniable fact that a criminal historic previous examine. in case you utilized on line it would say an similar. yet yeah maximum businesses supplies you a drug attempt its kinda needed now some states pending or dont do them. once youve handed the drug attempt and the criminal historic previous area you need to be solid to bypass. some situations a organization will basically employ you prompt reason there so determined for help they watch for the outcomes and then if theres a issue they are going to notify you and say whats up you're not any further elligable for this interest. the organization will call and say the checks are in and also you fail/handed. call the position in case you havent already and clarify who you're and say I utilized for this interest and im basically checking on the status of my software.

All I can say to you is that if were an employer, I would not hold a single DUI against you. And I'm sure there must be others out there with the same opinion. Don't give up.

Good luck...
