The war on drugs, with the relatively benign marijuana at its focal point, was started in the 1970's under Nixon's administration. Back then, the Vietnam conflict was drawing a lot of criticism and the government was desperately searching for something else for the public to focus on. They chose the "evils" of drugs. Vietnam is over, but the "war" on drugs is still being fought--and lost, along with billions of taxpayer dollars every year.

In short, it's mainly a bunch of political BS that most people have forgotten the cause of. Nowadays, everyone says, "Don't do drugs. Marijuana's bad, m'kay?" and kids repeat it, without really thinking about what the words mean.

that question causes my blood pressure to go HIGH. legalizing marijuana is no big deal. people are going to engage in smoking with or without legalization. the war on drugs is never going to be able to eliminate the use of marijuana, so make it legal and let's get on to the harder drugs.

Its simple economics...because it is so easy to grow, the government doesn't know how to tax it yet. It all about their cut of the action and since every one can grow it how do you tell the taxed weed from the untaxed weed...see the problem.

Because of it's addictive and physical properties. It's effects are very similar to those of alcohol.
