Java HashMap?

I need Help with java HashMap.How do i convert from an arraylist to a hashmap.

Map map = new HashMap();
Iterator itrerator = list.iterator();
while (itrerator.hasNext())
{
anElement e = (anElement) itrerator.next();
map.put(e.getId, e);
}
