If we only listened. read and watched cheerful and uplifting news stories, would it affect the state of the world today? Would there be an decrease to this significant upsurge in violence or would we just live in ignorant bliss?

That's certainly not the free press envisioned by Jefferson at the time our country was founded.
The purpose of the news is not to entertain, but to tell us what our governement & corporate leaders are up to. If we citizens can be properly informed by the press, only then can we make the decisions necessary to improve our society.

Sadly, media today are controlled by large corporations for profit, not average people for the public good.
These corporations produce news that entertains, and that keeps us distracted & uninformed.

Your idea that light, success-oriented news ought to be more featured is, forgive me, very naive.

The news media exist today to uphold the standards of the status quo, not to champion the the rights of the average citizen.

I think we would lose our basic human rights by being uninformed. Yes, we may all be happier if we didn't hear things about war or hate crimes or violence, but the fact of the matter is it's there, and we would only be in denial if we ignored it. Then we would probably slowly sink back into the ignorant ways of our ancestors during medieval times, before the advent of moveable type.

then we would be living in a fantasy world. Imagine if we ignored everything, ignored the Holocaust, ignored Darfur, ignored the famine in Ethiopia. What a sad world we would live in if we pretended nothing bad ever happened.
Those of us who have the privilege of living in the developed world should be the ones making sure we're educated about every else. We're the ones who can make a difference.
I don't think things would get any worse if we ignored everything...but they wouldn't get any better. And I for one wouldn't want to live in a world of ignorance (any more than we already do anyway).

what if the media reported only the truth?
3 jumbo jets of us die each day from perscribed drugs adverse reaction.
3 out of four can never get cancer from smoking
micro particulate [polution is the highest cause of lung cancer] from asbetos and wood smoke ,petrolium and coal particulate
alcohol kills [is the highest cause of death
suicide kills double the road deaths
terror is a beat up like being tough on drugs ,like reds under the bed ,create a deluded fear then get tough on it
the constitution is so writen as to protect big buisness
truth
we cant handle the truth
thus we get sports and light hearted pap that doesnt make us safe but is our real and present danger

I think we should do MORE positive stories. WE all know the suffering , grim stories that are overly reported, how about a few more positive goings on??znaiive, maybe, but it would be nice ya gotta admit.

I think this idea of only reporting success has been tried before. The publication was called 'Pravda' I believe.

NEWS, used to be a mix of HARSH and GOOD.
But now blood on the pavements is all we hear of. Of course Blood sells news. So blood wins.
It would be nice to go back to balanced news. But it comes down to money.
