There is no best brand,

check warrantys, guarantees etc
and stuck/dead pixel policys (VITAL !)

Dont buy a celeron (very slow)
AMDs have a problem with overheating and battery longevity

Look for a lot of memory as well at least
256MB for XP Home (pref 512MB)
512MB for XP Pro
or 1GB for Vista

check battery life as well & weight if its important.
xBlack screens are good if you can afford one.

Graphics memory
64MB for XP
128MB for Vista (if running Aero)

Apple is a niche market (dont get me wrong nice piece of kit)

Personally,
Toshiba have the best testing policys but the worst Pixel policy
(I know, I have a £500 3 day old door stop, due to a number of stuck pixels smack in the center of the screen, which they want nothing to do with, Their policy is 15 Stuck or Dead pixels before replacement, disgusting !!!)
I am going to start a web site comparing pixel policys for retailers and manufacturers, I think everyone should know.

The best PC for you will be the one that can run the software you will be using, and has the most hard disk space and memory for the money.

Personally, I have an Everex and an older IBM Thinkpad, and am very satisfied with both.

I also like Dell, Toshiba, Compaq, and Sony Vaio (in no particular order).

In my opinion most of the pcs insides are lower quality hard ware in the first place!! Laptops just tend to brake sooner than any pc, so the only 2 things I would look at when buying one is A) how long is my warrenty B) how much performance Vs price am I getting. Buy the best laptop as far as performance goes in your price range and make sure that the minimum warrenty you get is a year, I would put the extended ones on a laptop.

for great laptops at reasonable prices go to mesh computers(http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=MAINPAGE)
for example for less than £600 you can get a dual core mobile processor,1024mb of ram,a massive 100gb hard drive,128mb a.t.i x200m graphics and of course its wireless and bluetooth enabled
when you compare a sony equivelent laptop you would pay around £1500 for the same specs
dell laptops are very unreliable, and replacement parts cost a fortune
as for evesham, they are probally the next best to mesh, evesham are one of the oldest p.c manufacturers in the game, very reliable
but you cant go wrong with mesh
good luck

Lenovo (formerly IBM). I have a Thinkpad z61t and it's awesome. I know people that have problems with their Dell, Compaq, or Toshiba. And Sony is just expensive and not good on their support. Lenovo (if you don't want to get a Mac) is the best for reliability and support.

Well im sorry to say there is no best brand but diffrent brands give diffrent good things and bad things I would say it depends what you want it for if its for sytle maybe sony vaio but they cost a lot. For personal choices Dell as you can build them yourself.
But im afraid there is no wrong or right answer to your questions its all personal choice.

Sony make good stuff, not just laptops, but are expensive. Dell are good value for money for the systems as specified, but watch the cost of any "optional extras".

Sony Vaio is the best and Tishiba is the second best! I personally own a Toshiba Satellite and am very happy about it.

bought 3 dell laptops so far. Love them. VAIO will cost you more even though you have the same hardware configuration.

I personally like Dell laptops. I have 2 of them, one for me and one for my wife. I have also helped others purchase a Dell Laptop and recommend them frequently. They last a long time if you take care of them.

Dell also has great deals and coupons available. There is a 20% off $999 laptops at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html until 3/1

Good Luck.
