I'm not just saying this cause I'm Canadian and am a HUGE fan of Bret Harts, but Vince def. screwed bret. How can a match be stopped and the title given to the other guy before the match actually ended? Its obvious Vince screwed him hardcore.

Vince screwed Bret. Bret had the creative control for the last weeks of his WWF career. He didn't want to lose the title in Canada, so they decided he'd lose it the next night on RAW. But when Michaels had Bret in a Sharpshooter (Bret's finishing move!) McMahon told Earl Hebner to claim that Bret gave up.
It is even worsened by the fact that Bret had signed a contract for ten years with WWF a few months before, and turned down a WCW contract which would have been much more lucrative, because he felt loyalty for McMahon. McMahon told him a few weeks later that he could not afford to pay him any more, and asked him to sign a WCW contract, which was, of course, not as lucrative as the first one was.
Bret's failure was that he believed Vince McMahon, who is a man without honor. Bret even stated that he respected Vince McMahon like a father, so it really hurt him that he was screwed by him.

Actually, both arguments are right. Bret Hart was the WWF Champion and was planning on jumping to WCW while still holding the belt. Vince had the interests of his business as well as several jobs to protect. At Survivor Series of that year, Vince had to screw Bret out of the title to save his company. I personally don't like it whenever people say that Shawn Michaels screwed Bret Hart because he was doing what was best for his career at the time. Vince could have chosen anyone but he chose one of his top guys.
In conclusion, both are responsible for the "Montreal Screwjob" that took place. Bret Hart was wanting to demean a company that helped him gain the fame that he had at the time. Vince McMahon had to protect his business and was forced to screw Bret Hart out of the title. If you look at which was the greater of two evils, Bret Hart attempting to take the WWF Title with him to WCW was greater. When Ric Flair jumped to the WWF from WCW while still the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, they at least gave WCW enough consideration that they didn't demean the belt or throw it in the trash. WCW would have demeaned the WWF Championship just as they had done to other championships in the past.

Bret screwed Bret. He could've left the company with some pride in how he lost, even though it would mean not having a nice strap to carry to WCW. Bret knew what it meant if he won the match, and he was too stubborn to lay down to Michaels. Inevitably, Bret screwed Bret by going to WCW in the first place. He was misused, his brother died in WWF whiile he was in WCW, not saying that's his fault, I'm just saying I'm sure he'd much rather have been backstage that night to be by his brother's side as they tried to revive him. His move to WCW eventually resulted in his retirement. For those who don't know, Bret was kicked in the head FOR REAL by Goldberg. Bret's just now became 92% mobile after the event happened, and that was eight years ago. Bret's ego screwed Bret. If he would've just stuck with WWE, or even just laid down and jobbed like a man, his life would've been a lot better, and Shawn Michaels would be able to step foot in Canada without being crucified for some shoot event that happened 10 years ago.

it is called the Montreal screw job.
it was Vince that screwed Bret over the championship. belt. Brett was going to retire the day after winning the belt from hbk but instead a fast count on a sharp shooter kept Brett from winning the championship.

it started back 1992 when Shawn Micheals was in tag team called the rockers .they thought the won the championship but Vince gave back to the hart foundation. later on Micheals was supposed to lose the world title to hart at wrestle-mania 13 but Micheals refuse to drop the title to hart and gave the belt back to Vince. hart won the belt then signed a deal with wcw and Vince asked Bret to drop the belt in Montreal to Micheals. Bret told Vince to get bent and he had control in his contract . Vince didn't want Bret to bring the belt to wcw to dump in the trash can like the woman's championship had been done early. Vince had to protect his company. his father 's company
