Rocks are a link to to formation of the Earth, the layers of sedimentary rocks can also be used to date any fossils found in them.
There would also be a lot of unemployed geologists without them.
Still trying to think of a question, though.

Rocks are important because... LOL
Rocks, believe it or not, go through a cycle. Rocks are a part of the carbon cycle. Volcanoes spew forth rock from below the surface. These rocks are then deposited and earthquakes and plate tectonics cycle these rocks back down. Volcanoes are very important to our carbon levels in the atmosphere and in living things. Life on earth is dependent upon carbon.
When was the earth not a rock?
Answer: Technically it's always been a rock however, in the beginning of formation the earth was more like the mantle is now. Do you think it had global warming or cooling to get to where we are now?

Rocks are important because they are what supports the dirt that all of the trees and grass grow on. Rocks are also used to make roads and schools, houses and buildings. Rocks when they are very old make sand that you play on at the beach! Smooth flat rocks will skip across the water when you throw them at a lake. Rocks can be fun.
When you think of rocks do you think there are some that are hard and some that are soft?

All the serious answers are good.
A very important point was missed, though: rocks contain minerals, ore deposits, gems, and so on. Some rocks ARE economically important--coal, for example.
Here's my entry for a question: When did the first basalt form on the earth's surface?

Let's see - people ahve used rocks in many different ways - from tools to building materials to metal refining to jewelry to fuels sources.
When did humans first start using rocks? is one possible question
