I assume you mean the DVD burner format? Do you mean is it a DVD+R or DVD-R? If that is what you mean, your laptop is new enough that odds are it will do both formats. Or you could check the documentation that came with your machine, or check Gateway's website for your model.

Most DVD R/Ws are both now a days, and can record in both modes.
