Mufflers can greatly effect performance. Installing the wrong muffler can increase or decrease performance. Contrary to what most people think, noisy mufflers can decrease performance by creating a lack of "back pressure".

I would put it differently.
A muffler has fiberglass or other packing in a box with holes in the tubing so that the noisy pulses from the engine (that you hear when an unmuffled junker or noise monster goes by) It normally restricts the flow of exhaust somewhat.
A resonator, if properly designed, delays and reroutes the pulses so they fall into the spaces between pulses, toning the whole down. If really, really properly designed, the lows in the resonator arrive just as a pulse of pressure is coming from the motor and the pulse gets sucked right in, actually reducing the back pressure on the engine and increasing its power.
Taking it off will make your vehicle very noisy and illegal in most places.

an exhaust resonator is basically the same thing as a muffler, in a sense that it cancles noise. a muffler just bounces the sound waves around inside to make the noise quieter whereas a resonator actually combats the sound waves coming in from the exhaust with sound waves of the same frequency ideally compleetly canceling the noise completely. for more info; www.howstuffwork.com and search for a resonator

so if this piece is IMPORTANT, why would a muffler repair shop LEAVE IT OFF THE CAR when the car was in for exhaust repairs?
