A "host" is a server. A domain name is the name of that server. Domain names are registered IP addresses with friendly names.
Here are some examples.
URL:
http://answers.yahoo.com/
host domain name:
answers.yahoo.com
domain name (the actual domain that the above aliases):
feu.answers.yahoo8.akadns.net
IP address of domain feu.answers.yahoo8.akadns.net:
209.73.187.220
IP address of answers.yahoo.com:
209.73.187.220
As you can see, the IP address is the same for both, proving that they are in fact the same server.
Unfriendly URL refers to the same location as the friendly URL above:
http://209.73.187.220/
Domain Name Services (DNS) is what translates the domain name to an actual IP Address. In the above example, the host domain name is an alias of the actual domain, which can be confusing but you can clearly see that "answers.yahoo.com" is much friendlier.
Hope that helps.
p.s. I looked up the actual domain for answers.yahoo.com at http://www.dnsstuff.com/

A name that identifies one or more IP addresses. For example, the domain name microsoft.com represents about a dozen IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.pcwebopedia.com/index.html, the domain name is pcwebopedia.com.
Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains. For example:
gov - Government agencies
edu - Educational institutions
org - Organizations (nonprofit)
mil - Military
com - commercial business
net - Network organizations
ca - Canada
th - Thailand
Because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names, every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses.
