Because we would have to admit that we were wrong beforehand.
In doing so we would lose our most basic confidence in living our life.
The fear that somebody knows more than I is too often viewed as a threat to my intelligence therefore rejection overrides contemplation.

I don't want to experience unearned Joy, peace at the cost of freedom (or knowledge), harmony with evil persons, or gratitude expected as a master does a slave.

So I am unwilling to change thoughts simply to experience these sensations, if the costs have not been duly considered.

Your statement is identical to what I've heard when someone trys to get me to take narcotics like Ecstacy. A stated short term benefit in exchange for an unstated long term loss.

"Afraid" to change, no, they're probably afraid of what the change will cost them, and they're quite possibly correct to avoid them.

It takes a lot of second guessing yourself about what you are doing with your life. Is it where you wanted to be? Is this all there is for me? Things of that nature. If change of thought is forced, it brings rebellion. But if it is within reason, it can bring peace, harmony, so forth.

We become accustomed to the pathways of the mind our consciousness travels. Like driving home at the end of the day. We know our route so well we have taken so many times, we don't even think about it anymore.

Taking a new route is to travel into places of unknown sights and experiences. And that's the issue.

It is the fear of the unknown that "makes us rather bear those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of".

People tend to grasp their egos and problems because they feel that is their life - problems. People don't realize they choose problems and desire conflict. Sometimes they're just afraid of changing their habits and mental patterns (ie: frustration- anger-sadness -depression -repeat) because they don't want to be disappointed when they discover there's no such thing as perfect harmony. It's hard to "Let that which does not matter truly slide."

People require some measure of character to admit they need to change their thinking, but how many people have true character? It takes effort to research issues and to conclude what the truth is, but how many people will make the effort? Finding the truth may involve confronting one's own prejudices, but how many people ever do this? I believe these are a few of the reasons why it is so difficult for people to change their thinking.

exactly, thier entire life might be changed. what if you grew up with an opinion drilled into your mind by your local culture, and developed a comfort zone in that. what if you made that the basis of your whole life? then suddenly, someone is trying to change your mind. you are fed strange, different thaughts. yes, your life might change a lot. and for many people, that is scary. those people are being forced to step outside thier comfort zones and into a harsh realitly. an exapmle of this would be a priest who suddenly doesn't believe anymore. what would he do? he has based his life on the religion that he doesn't believe anyomre. or what about someone who suddenly learns that they were adopted. its hard on them.

If one changes their thinking, they are admitting that they are wrong. No one likes to be wrong!!

It takes a VERY strong and wise person to admit that they're wrong and to then change their thinking.

Of course, no one should change their thinking without having a logical reason for it. Example: Columbus knew the world was round. For others to change their thinking, he HAD to prove it...which he did

Sadly, there were still many who refused to change their minds.

Because old habits die hard and most people are not proactive in making themself a better person. If it were a perfect world we would all change our thinking everyday as we learned new things and progressed through this world.

Because if people change their thinking then they just may have to admit that they were wrong about something or other and admitting faults, bad judgement calls and the like is something very few people enjoying admitting to themselves or to anyone else.
