Arguments in favor of building dams:
- Renewable clean power generation
- Flood control
- Irrigation
- Storage helps maintain a higher river flow in late summer and during droughts
- Recreation/boating on reservoir

Arguments against building dams:
- Reservoir submerges wildlife habitat
- Dam releases colder water, which may affect native fish species
- May reduce whitewater recreation on river
- May impact fish migration

The people who want to dam rivers point to flood control, irrigation with the impounded waters, power generation, and easy recreation on the lake created, although sometimes these conflict with each other (a full lake for power does a poor job of controlling floods.)
The people who keep them are point to the few places people can see a natural river, the wild recreation of an open river (which some people fear), the destruction of natural habitat by the lake and the changes in water downstream and the conflicts of the claimed benefits.
