DSL stands for digital subscriber line. The most common type is ADSL meaning assymetric digital subscriber line meaning it has different upload and download rates.

Basically a digital internet signal is superimposed on the line at a different frequency to that used for voice calls, this is then split by a microfilter

It stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It is a broadband connection. It uses existing copper pair phone line wiring in conjunction with special hardware on the switch and user ends of the line. This special hardware allows for a continuous digital connection over the phone lines. It uses different frequencies than voice so you can talk on the phone and be on the 'net at the same time....as long as you have filters on the line. This should be provided by the ISP.
