ok, I have a dell 3100 dimension with windows XP and I'm trying to network with an older computer. It has windows 98 and the only drive(cd) is shot. Is there any way to network these computers? I have DSL, a router, and all the cables are ran.

You'll need an Ethernet card (about $10.00) and the card's driver

Get a new DVD burner (Pioneer 111 less than $37.) now

well install the cd that came with the router onto the xp machine. follow the instructions. then with both pcs plugged into the router and the router into the modem..turn on both pcs. xp should detect the network connection right away. on 98, make sure the ip is set to automatic unless the router instructions gives you an ip to enter(go to control panel, network settings, click on properties, then click on tcp/ip properties) it should detect it after that. make sure you can get on the internet after that. if you have any problems, feel free to send me an e-mail.
