Due to evolution, millions of years ago our species advanced enough to make our own clothing with the furs from animals and managed to survive colder climates by doing so. We have developed to not need fur around our whole body so the hair stopped being part of a humanist trait as it is not necessary anymore. Those from hotter countries are more hairless than caucasians as they have no need at all for hair apart from the head as this where the heat leaves the body the most. As for the pubic areas, this is a way to keep sexual organs at the right temperature for reproduction. All the hair on our body has a purpose, it's just some have inherited the dominant gene of lots of body hair whilst others have the recessive gene which is baldness.

Humans belong to the classification known as Mammals. The basic attributes of Mammals are they have fur (or hair) nurse their young and are warm blooded.
Although Humans do not have full body hair (fur) they do have hair. Men generally are hairier than women. Elephants are also Mammals and although they seem to not have fur they also have body hair. All mammals have some degree of hair while others have thick hair or fur.
So to answer your question: Humans do have "fur" but it is very sparse. BUT when a person is cold or frightened the hair can stand up the same as the fur on a cat or dog does for the same reasons.

Humans came to existence in Africa and did not therefore need fur but sweating glands instead (i.e. in the process of evolution the ancestor of humans lost his fur cover).
As people dispersed allover the Earth they became accustomed to the cold to a certain degree (I have seen myself people from "primitive society" walking barefoot in snow) and then invented various coverings and dress.
Thus there was never a need to return to the "hairy state" though I guess the genes are still present in the human genes pool as sometimes a very hairy (fur covered) child is born. It means that should a cataclysm occur and people are left with no dress or a source of heat, still some of us will survive.

Hey
We do have fur-or to be exactly correct-body hair like all other hairy mammals and weird and wonderful creatures of the earth. But like the others have said we have either evolved or God made us that way.
SCIENTIFICALLY the purpose of our body hair is to keep us warm, regulate body temperature (the roots of hairs have sweat glands which help us cool down-please look in a science book for the exact way it does this!!!!!). We dont have as much as animals as we live in centrally conditioned homes, have clothes on most of the time, can get food wherever and whenever we want etc.
Whereas apes and other such animals live outside so their hair is there for their protection, heat etc. Some creatures also have long large thick spines which are actually giant hairs which when sticking on end tell predators to back off. (The Fight or Flight response).
Also human head hair is coarser and thicker of that on the body. The fine hairs on your body is usually called down and there is more of this per inch of the skin than there is on the scalp.
During puberty hair growth is effected by hormones that is why more grow on your private parts (protecting whats down there). Gross as it may sound it grows more in yr armpits so more sex hormones can be released to attract the opposite sex.
Extreme anorexics also find that thicker darker hair grows on their bodies--this is a result of the lack of heat and energy being made (no intake of food) so body compensates by growing hair to keep warm.
Anyway I hope this helps and hasnt been to long winded. Send me an email if you need more help :D

We do have fur just not as much as other mammals. backs of our arms, top of our head (for most), privates, mens chests, We have fur it's just finer than most mammals. And the answer would be. Clothing. We tend to wear clothing in cold climates, and less in warm climates. Therefore we don't need the fur and have less of it. (the areas that lose the most heat also have the most fur coincidentally. Privates, Pits, and head)

We have hair, not fur. I'm not positive, but it probably is to make room for the sweat glands. If we had full-body fur we'd have problems venting our heat.
