Kaspersky has been the top rated most effective Anti-Virus software.
AVG is at least on par with Norton, and I personally think it is better. Besides they have a free version of their AV software.
ZoneAlarm has been given top reviews in the personal firewall category, Outpost is what I used to recommend. Outpost used to have a free version, I don't think they do anymore though. However, I don't much recommend personal firewall products as a rule.
Of course I recommend Linux, which does not require AV software, and has probably the most used packet filtering firewall (ipchains/iptables) included.

Just my personal opinion as I am no expert. I purchased Zone Alarm Anti Virus which included their firewall. It messed up my Win XP system big time and I had to uninstal it and got my money back. Since then I have purchased and have been using Windows Live One Care as it includes everything you need in one package. I got it at Sams for 31.88 compared to Microsofts web site price of 49.99. I have also seen it at Best Buy for even less. Shop around for it before buying. It also can be used on up to 3 computers for the one price and it's good for a year. I agree with what was said earlier, that it is Microsoft and is built to work with the operating system and therefore should have fewer issues. So far I have had zero problems. Again, just my opinion. If you go with that please take some time to read the Windows Live One Care forums. I found some advice there on what to do before installing One Care. ALSO: completely uninstall any other anti-virus and firewall software first. You also need to turn off the Windows Firewall through the contol panel. Don't just use the Control Panel to uninstall the Norton stuff because this often leaves stuff behind that will mess up your new program but check out how to " completely " remove your exisitng AV program. You can usually find help on their web sites or by doing a Google search on how to do a complete uninstall. I have never used Norton but never will either after reading so many bad things about it. Good luck..........

Well never use norton as its the worst security ever made and I know for a fact that systemantec actually make viruses and distribute them. According to results of virus tests the best free anti virus is AOL Active Virus Sheild (Search Goolge) which was ranked 2nd with an overall of 90%+ detection rate of viruses with Norton being a lot furthur down. AVG isnt in the top ten so try AOL Active Virus Shield and Zone Alarm Firewall is good yes but can be hard to remove. Also get Ad-Aware Personal SE which is also free it covers tracking cookies, spyware and Adware.

It's all a matter of preference. Some software (like Norton) use large amounts of memory, but others don't, but still give adequate protection.
For more details check out this site: http://www.mbusbyuk.info/security.html and also take a look at the links page on the site.
Good Luck!

zone alarm is not a anti-virus,its a firewall and a very good one at that
i can understand you wanting to switch from norton, its a drain on your p.c,s memory, why not switch to one of the excellent free anti-virus software downloads
i have been using a a/v/p(anti-virus program) called avast 4.7 for the last 18 months and its probally the best free a/v/p avalible
you can download avast from http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html,and this installs and sets up in less than 2 minutes
combine this with spybot(http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html),a excellent free anti-spyware program with brilliant protection(imunization feature)and lavasoft adaware(http://www.lavasoft.de/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php) you have a excellent free software package thats cost you absolutely nothing
of course you can add zone-alarm to this as your firewall but remember to disable the windows firewall(if zonealarm dosent do it automatically)
with the excellent free products avalible online these days you shouldnt have to pay for p.c security, money you can use for important stuff like memory upgrades or a new graphic card
i hope this helps
good luck

The best of them all is Windows live OneCare.
It is an antivirus, firewall, antispyware, and tune up software (to make your PC run faster). I am running it this very second and it's working like a dream.
I have included the link to the information page below... Please take a look.
Windows live OneCare is £39.99 a year (£14.99 for ex-beta participants like me) with a 90 day free trial period.

OK. Good, free, award-winning security software would be:
ClamWin (Anti-Virus)
Avast! (Anti-Virus)
ZoneAlarm (Firewall)
SpyBot: Search & Destroy (Anti-SpyWare)
I have my PC protected with these programs. Download them at www.download.com
Get rid of Norton. It sucks and interferes with lots of other programs...
Good Luck!
