TBH I would rather not get into any kind of debate about metal's "worth" and even on the occasions when I have done I try to keep an objective line of reasoning. As for people taking the line of "anything but metal is bad" I genuinely feel sorry for these people. Metal is an incredibly diverse genre, and without it I never would have even dreampt of getting into jazz, classical, ambient and prog rock. As for sub genres I do think they serve a purpose. If someone is a fan of Blind Guardian and asks for a recommendation, but not, say, Anata,it's better to point them at power metal than "metal" as a whole. Equally, if you have a particular style within a subgenre having sub-sub genres can be very useful. e.g. my Dad dislikes most death metal, but has found a liking for progressive death metal (Opeth, Cynic and the like). My point is that subgenres just help people find stuff they like and help split the wheat from the chaff. That being said, they shouldn't be used as totaly to determine what to listen to as there is bad metal in all subgenres and potentially good bands (from your perspetive at least) in subgenres that a listener may generally dislike. BQ: Ozzy Osbourne (I then went to Sabbath and ended up pretty much going up the metal history tree). BQ2: Nope, my favorite ATM is probably Spawn Of Possession (heavily classically influenced death metal band). BQ3: Probably about 12-13. I can't remember an exact age. BQ4: Technical death metal or Progressive metal. BQ5: I never actually really got into hard rock...
