comics or graphic novels.... that's a tough list of "not's" you have....
of course the first answerer is right... top of any list should be Sandman
next would be a given; batman: dark, non-squeaky clean type... many titles and storylines to pick up along with tons of TPBs over the years...
along the lines of superheros that are not "squeaky clean" though? almost all fall into that category these days from what I have seen.... unless I just do not read the ones that are? but I would say
wonderwoman
any and all xmen titles
wolverine
spawn (he'd be one that falls into your narrow field here)
you know what? I could keep listing things I like and try like heck to keep things I think you would not like (sci-fi) off that list? I think though a lot of other people will throw theirs up here... in the meantime here i what I suggest..... go to the local comic store... flip thru comics on the rack.. look at the covers to see what titles, covers catch your interest... and inside, look at the art/storyline... you would be surprised at what you find you like.....
all the "styles" or genres you have listed are all great... you can find things like Anne Rice's Vampire series... let's see... horror books that are called "they came from the fifties" all by accident and find you like them... I use those two cause that is one happy coincidence that happened to me once.... just flipping thru the boxes of back issues.... I found I liked sci-fi, horror, fantasy.... Manga..... you name it.... but I went in with just a short little list that included X-Men, Amethyst and Superman.......I left with so much more.....
I know, I talk a lot.... you asked for a list of what a bunch of strangers would recommend.... I gave you some? but honestly best recommendation I can make is just go spend some time browsing and find your own treasures instead of ours?

Detective Comics by Paul Dini is currently one of the best crime comics out there at the moment.
One of my favorites is Fables by Bill Willingham. It's a mixture of fantasy, crime fiction, politics, and has some awesome characters. Start by reading the first graphic novel collection (Legends in Exile) and move forward.
Sandman by Gaiman is always a classic as is Dark Knight Returns and Batman Year One by Frank Miller! Also, I'd try Miller's work on Daredevil, as well as Brian Bendis and Ed Brubaker's work on both books.
Gotham Central by Rucka and Brubaker is highly recommended by others.
If you like horror, try the Walking Dead from Image comics.
Hope those are some good suggestions for you!

First check out Brian K Vaughan's "Y the Last Man." It's a very intelligent and sometimes dark story of a mysterious plague that kills all the men on earth but the protagonist. It might sound like a gimmicky idea but trust me it is excecuted very well. Someone else recommended and I agree that Robert Kirkman's "Walking Dead" is an awsome series. It follows a group of individuals trying to survive a world over run by zombies, think "28 Days Later." Other people say "Sandman" which I think is pretty good though you may dig it more than me if you are into gothic type stuff. One of my favorite series of all time is Sam Kieth's "the Maxx" which has amazing art and wonderful characters. And finally, I will always recommend anything Alan Moore does including "the Watchmen" (many consider this the greatest graphic novel of all time), his run on "Swampthing" is fantastic, and "From Hell" which is many, many times better then the movie they made of it, oh and samething with "V for Vendetta." Oh and if you are looking for very dark and very twisted, check out Garth Ennis' "The Preacher."

I agree with the answerers that say go to a store and just browse, look thru back issues yourself.
I asked people to recommend some to me at one point, and found I did not really care too much for them. I did however get so bored, and wanted something to read, I looked on my own and found that I liked comics I would never have thought I liked. i.e. I HATE horror movies but LOVE horror comics!!
you never know until you try something yourself

Sand Man and Books of Magic, both by Neil Gaiman... V is for Vendetta...
"Manga" is simply Japanese for "whimsical/random pictures", in toerh words, "comic books." Now, don't let the word "manga" scare you away- Japanese comics are JUST as good as the American ones. :)
I highly, highly recommend reading Death Note, (haha; and there's nothing "whimsical" about it) Blade of the Immortal, and Vagabond.

Well i recommend Marvel Comics. The best are what if comics and in the Ultimate universe. In the Ultimate work like ultimate spider-man and x-men and others its a remake of spider-man but still the same story. Hope you find a good comic book for you.
