Also can i play the mp3's universally between a pc and a mac

Some.... Keep in mind that the MAC will not read all PC formatted drives. Some drives, like the SanDisk and Western Digital drives come with a specially formatted drive, so that both Macs and PCs can read the original format.

If you buy such a device from STAPLES, and it does not work as you want it, they will TAKE IT BACK without any hassles.

Yes. As long as your programs are compatible with the filetype. Format the drive in FAT or FAT32 and you will have no problems.

Some MACs (OS X) can read NTFS, but I would suggest FAT32

Sure. As long as it is formatted with a format that both can use IE: FAT. or FAT32
