When you get up to the Price of an iPod, its about functions and looks. The iPod manages to cram more in to a smaller package.
My experience of other makes is not good. Software that crashes. Players that die after a couple of months. Players that can't be recognised by XP.........
I bought an iPod and so did my wife, because at least you have the backing of a large corporation and a large base of online users to help solve any problems that arise! If you actually look at the failure rate of an iPod against Product in the market place, the failure rate is actually very low. How many people do you know of that are still using Consumer Electronic products as old as the first generation iPod? I know several people who still use first generation iPods on a daily basis (although they own newer versions also).

iPods work perfectly with tunes purchased from other sources. I have a 30 gig Video that is half full and I have never purchased a track or album from iTunes. I don't even have an iTunes account.
I use iTunes for uploading and management only. I find the program easy to use and efficient for my requirements. If you play around, you will find options to do almost anything you require. Even backups! If you don't like iTunes, then you can download several alternatives, although I don't actually think that any of them are better than iTunes. Do a Google search.

A couple of differences between the iPod and other MP3 players are:
The iPods ability to play video, display pictures, play a few basic games, keep memos, and a few other features whereas most MP3 players only just play MP3 files.

iPods normal have more memory that other MP3 players. Although MP3 players do have changable memory through use of SD cards and memory sticks... they do not have as much capacity as the more expensive iPods.

Depends a bit. You have to look at capacity, whether it is flash memory or hard drive based.

I think you are a bit of a fop if you look at it from an aesthetic point of view. I have a creative zen touch.... its an ugly brick of a machine bu t it works perfectly and stores my whole music collection.

Get what suits you and shop around.

i think its that apple is a very trustable and innovative company and having their products is very convenient and "cool". sometimes the ipod is better. apple also has very good customer service and tech support that makes it easy to use and get help with their products.

and theyre cute.
