I get very bad cramps during my period, and my mother does not. However, my aunt does. I was wondering: is that genetic? The severeness of cramps during your period? I am Italian, Irish,a nd Jewish by blood, and I wanted to know if there is anything that has to do with this relating to my problem.

I don't think your cramps have anything to do with your nationality. I do think, however, that they are genetic. All the women in my family suffer from severe menstrual cramps, most of us are on medication. You should go to you obgyn as soon as possible because it can be something else causing your severe cramps, like endometrium, which is when you shed the lining of your uterus wall..this causes severe cramps and can lead to more serious issues like infertility.

An interesting fact on cramps and child birth: My professor of psychology in college once said that menstrual cramps and child birth pains are psychological. That only women in the western societies suffer from cramps and pains while giving birth, meaning that women in, say, third world countries, don't suffer as much. I don't know how true that is but if you think about, we are told from an early age that cramps hurt, that giving birth hurts..so maybe it is true...maybe the pain is just in our heads. Honestly, I have pain...horrible pains..and refuse to believe that it is all in my head but who knows, right?

I would say definately, in my experiences. I get these HORRID cramps, but my mother does not. My grandma, however, does - and we share many other symptoms, as well. I crave sweethearts and cherries when I'm PMSy - she does too. Weirdness, but I honestly do think it's genetic,

It need not be necessarily hereditary. You can find cures for such things. You can try out some home remedies. You can also look for information in the web. I found this website very useful. http://aches.in/cramps.html
