Ok, I'm 45 but I like some alternative music. I've passed my husband, he's stuck in the 70's...I'm way out of touch. What other bands can you suggest. I like, "Sick puppies, Dandy Worhols, Black eyed peas. Had a kid lost touch with the real world for awhile..help.

i personally am of the opinion that what's going on in the indie scene is a lot better than what's going on in the mainstream. in fact, I (and most of the people i know) listen mostly to music from the '80s and '90s (and also quite a bit from the '60s and '70s).

however, some mainstream bands doing great stuff these days (i'm pulling these straight from my itunes):

radiohead (comes with my absolute highest recommendation)
coldplay
arctic monkeys
the rapture
barenaked ladies
beck
ben folds
bloc party
gorillaz
jack johnson
john mayer
the shins
the strokes (especially important band - they almost singlehandedly changed the direction of popular music)
counting crows
damien rice

and there are a million great indie bands but that would make this list unnecessarily long.

I used to listen to the radio, follow Rolling Stone etc to find out about new music. What I do now is follow what is happening in the local and regional music scene, go to local venues and listen and talk to others. I am fortunate enough to be in a town with a lot of high end music talent and I mostly ignore the national scene with a few exceptions. Besides who wants to go see a big name concert at an arena for big bucks, when you can see great talent and original stuff in a much more intimate environment? If you like it, pick up their CD.
