Nothing... it happens all the time. I walk around a lot, especially if my opponent takes a long time to think of a move. Besides.. you should be able to get a drink or go to the bathroom...Usually people won't start walking if their own clock is running. So, once you've made your move, your opponent will most likely return soon. If this is not the case, his time might expire, but I've never seen this actually happen.
It is possible that people arrive late for a game due to traffic. Now, if the clocks are set in motion they can lose valuable time..and eventually, the game. This can be after one hour or the officials may set another limit.
For the people that answered: ''Cheat''..I say: grow up. There's always someone present that watches over the games, and besides, how do you want to cheat? Do you really think your opponent won't remember where the pieces are? Even if he doesn't, that's why you write the moves down...

The best way to deal with people that leave the room while playing chess is....Always, always set some type of time limit....
Also what u could do is turn the room into private and start another game and let the time force him to forfeit...And while u r playing your other game u will earn rating and also you don't have to worry about someone coming into the room and finishing the game.....Because of course the room is private

THis happens commonly in chess games of over 1 hour of duration. This is not illegal and even chess grandmasters do it during their 5- hour games! If you are playing without a clock then tell your opponent to come back soon. In a tournament just take your time and move. You can then get up yourself if you feel stiff. But don't get carried away, always return when your opponent makes his next move!
Hope this helps!
