Do you think most people take long periods of time before they open up themselves to others? In a general sense. Do you think they wait for others to open up first?

As much time as it takes. I was married to my ex-husband for 20 years before the divorce was final. I really didn't fully KNOW him until after 18 years and his true colors emerged. I have known my fiance on the other hand, for a little over a year, and I feel as if I have known him my entire life.

I don't know about other people but it takes me a long time to open up. i think this is the reason why i never get through an interview

It all depends on the person.
However, you don't really get to know someone's true self until you live with them.
